The Adamawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the assault on a woman by Sen Elisha Abbo in an Abuja shop but has pleaded on behalf of the Senator for forgiveness.

The PDP senator who represents Adamawa North District in the National Assembly was at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday remorsefully apologetic, and his party in his home state which called its own press briefing in Yola on Thursday begged that the apology be accepted.

Barr. Tahir Shehu, the state chairman of the PDP, said during the briefing at the party’s secretariat in Yola that elected legislative officers should not, either in private or public, molest or degrade any person, moreso a woman.

Shehu said the party in the state could not fathom any acceptable reason for the action of the senator and therefore distances itself from the unruly behaviour.

The party nonetheless urged the lady who was assaulted and her immediate family as well as the general public to forgive the excesses of the senator.

The party chairman said,

“We wish to state that every human being has the propensity to err. It is upon this premise that we call on the lady who was assaulted and her immediate family to forgive the senator.

“We equally plead with the generality of Nigerians and particularly the female folk to find space in their hearts to forfive him, moreso as he has rendered an unreserved apology to the lady in question and Nigerians.”

He further avowed that the party is in support of the decision by the Senate to investigate the matter, but cautioned against vendetta.

“It should not be used as a vendetta against Sen Elisha Ishaku Abbo as being clamoured by some interest groups,”

He said.
